Seven Sisters' Championship, 2011


Host Wellesley College topped Vassar College 4-1 to secure their 12th title in the 2011 Seven Sisters’ Championship. The Blue finished the tournament with 19 points and a 4-0 record. 

Vassar's 16 points were good for second place overall. Mount Holyoke (10 points), Smith (4 points) and Bryn Mawr College (1 point) rounded out the field.

Day 1, Smith was pitted against Wellesley and Vassar; the toughest competition. The Smith team played with determination and stayed the course throughout the day regardless of the results. The Pioneers opened the day 2 with a loss to MHC but rallied to win the second match of the day against Bryn Mawr.

 The longest and most dramatic match of the tournament came in the Smith/MHC dual. At the number one singles position, sophomore Rachel Canfora played an epic three-set thriller with Nahrhee Han of MHC. Nahrhee did prevail 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-0). 
Rachel, however, kept everyone on the edge of their seats as she fought back several times from a deficit The most dramatic comeback was in the third set. Rachel was down 0-5 before she started her steady, focused, determined comeback. She tied the score and took it to a tiebreaker before finally conceding the victory.

The Seven Sisters Tennis Championship has been held since 1983. Wellesley leads the pack with 12 overall titles, while Vassar is second with nine titles. Smith has eight total team victories.
