Smith Tennis Host Wellesley In Season Opener

The Smith College Tennis Team has  much to celebrate following their opening match against Wellesley on Sat, Sept. 15.  Although Smith Tennis was beaten soundly 9-0, the score does not tell the story.  The members of the Smith College Tennis Team have many tennis gifts and abilities to exploit this season and you will see the team members getting better each match. Why?   The team has heart, enthusiasm, resiliency and a desire to improve.  They are thoughtful and supportive of each other and it is clear that they look forward to coming to practice and working hard.  What more can you ask?  With one match behind them and an opportunity to play many more in this short season, you will see this team improve quickly!

The team was led in singles this week by sophomore, Bayla Weick.  Bayla set the standard for what is to come.  Moving into the number 1 singles position for the first time, she showed heart, determination and a cunning ability to anticipate each shot.  Her goal:  get the ball back in play and she did, over and over and over again! Many rallies exceeded 30 as she and her opponent from Wellesley exchanged groundstrokes. She put up a gallant fight taking her match to a third set tiebreak and finally succumbing 8-10 in the tiebreak.  She played with poise and determination setting the standard for Smith Tennis.
