Corporately

The Smith College Tennis Team defeated Springfield in the first of the two matches on Saturday, April 2. The match was close but Smith dominated the doubles and continued their momentum into the singles. The match went down to the wire with Rachel Canfora bringing in the winning point for Smith.

Mustering every bit of energy they had, Smith took to the courts for their second match. RPI proved tougher than Springfield defeating Smith 5-1. Once again, the doubles was competitive and exciting. Smith took 1 doubles and lost number 2 doubles in a tiebreaker. The match was played to decision and RPI earned 2 points in doubles and 3 points from the number 1, 3 and 4 singles players.

Individually

The Smith College Tennis senior co-captains Allyson Hawkins and Maggie Steiner were named the Athletes of the Week for Smith College. The pair have done a very good job leading the team this semester. They take their job as captains very seriously and they are passionate about tennis and the Smith Tennis Team. This past weekend they were promoted from number 2 doubles to number one doubles (because of team injuries). This is a big jump in the intercollegiate tennis world. They stepped up with humility and determination playing smart doubles in both matches. They had a good match against Springfield College, albeit a loss, but they were ready for the afternoon match. They took on RPI and played solid doubles anticipating every move from the opposition and countering it with controlled groundstrokes, volleys and overheads to the open court. The pair exemplified the work that we have given to doubles this semester and set the tone for our #2 and #3 doubles teams as well.

Grace McKay Corkum is our up and coming first year who has a strong will, a gentle spirit and very fast feet on the court. She stepped into the number 6 singles position with little collegiate singles experience and pulled out a tough three set win. She played like a veteran. Grace improves every time that she steps foot on the tennis court. She is extremely coachable and eager to improve.

Rachel Canfora proved herself on the singles court this weekend with a win against Springfield and a close match to RPI. Rachel gets to every ball and her dogged determination keeps her in many matches.

Smith heads to the Seven Sisters' Championship on April 9.
