Smith College Tennis was off to a great start for the spring season with a 5-4 win over Curry College. Smith hosted Curry on Saturday, Feb 23 in a evenly matched competition. Smith captured two of the doubles at number 1 and 3 before moving on to take three of the singles matches. Jordan Dubin, Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas and Carly Melillo, had a perfect afternoon winning both their doubles and singles matches. Victoria vonSaucken earned a point at the third doubles position with Carly and came within a tiebreak of taking 4th singles.
Jordan and Kyle partnered at number 1 doubles to defeat Lauren Chuha and Kimberly Love 8-5. Victoria von Saucken and Carly Melillo earned their doubles point 8-6 over Emily Mongello and Alison Rhodes at the third doubles position. Seema Samawi and Andrea Tanco lost to Devin Curly and Elizabeth Zarkades at number 2 doubles 4-8.
Jordan Dubin lead the singles field by defeating Emily Mongello decisively 6-0, 6-0 at number 1 singles. Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas followed suit at number 2 singles defeating Kimberly Love 6-2, 6-1. Seema Samawi and Andrea Tanco did not fare as well losing to Lauren Chuha and Devin Curly in straight sets at the number 3 and 5 singles position. Victoria von Saucken came within two points of victory before bowing to Elizabeth Zarkades 3-6, 6-3 (8-10).
With the match tied at 4-4, Carly Melillo, newcomer to the Smith team this spring, stepped up to the plate at number 6 singles and clenched the deciding victory over Ali Rhodes 6-4, 6-2 and giving Smith College the 5-4 win and a great kick-off to the spring season.
