Smith Tennis Opens Fall Season With MIT

Smith Tennis has several veterans on the Fall, 2011 team as well as several new faces but it was not enough to stand up to the hard hitting Engineers. Smith Tennis hit a brick wall in their opener against MIT on Saturday, September 10 at home. The Engineers, armed with three first years in the starting line-up jumped to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Led by Lauren Quisenberry (NEWMAC Athlete of the Year and Rookie of the Year in 2010) , MIT carried their momentum into the singles winning all six singles matches in under two hours. Eunice Zhao, at sixth singles for Smith, provided the only glimmer of hope for the Pioneers splitting sets and then succumbing to her opponent in a third set tiebreaker.

Smith's victories came on the exhibition courts as Szilvi Kiss and Allie Ryan both won their singles matches.

The team plans to get "back to the drawing board" this week as they regroup and prepare to take on the former defending champs of the NEWMAC conference, Wheaton College. The match is schedule for 1pm in Norton, MA.
