The Smith College Tennis Team opened their spring season on the road against Bates College on Sunday, March 6 in Lewiston, ME. The Bobcats were gracious hosts even though the day was less then desirable weather-wise forcing the match indoors.
Bates is an experienced team and well into their season, recently returning from their spring break tour in FL. The Bobcats took charge right from the beginning by winning the doubles and then moving on to sweep the singles. Although the score was lopsided, the Smith Pioneers stayed in the competition never showing signs of defeat. They gained valuable experience and left Maine eager to build on their potential.
The spring line-up for Smith looks entirely different from the fall. Three of Smith's top singles players from the fall are off this season to JYA and other activities. The Pioneers will look forward to the return of Jaimi Inskeep and Clair Oblamski next semester but; in the meantime, the Smith Tennis Team is rising to the challenge. Gianna Teague, Maggie Steiner and Eunice Zhao were the only three in the starting line-up from the fall. They led the team as Ally Hawkins, Rachel Canfora, Meghan Smith and Grace McKay-Corkum joined the veterans and rounded out the line-up. Ally Hawkins is no stranger to Smith Tennis returning as the senior co-captain with Maggie Steiner.
The Smith Pioneers head to Hilton Head Island on Sat., March 12. They will face 4 opponents while on the island.
